[Early enough in the morning that it's clear someone couldn't get back to sleep, a series of doodles appear on the page: they're Sally's best estimate of the floor plan of her apartment, with little rudimentary sketches of furniture in various placements. Over the span of a half hour, several are drawn with different configurations and crossed out before one ends up circled. A check mark is drawn next to it for good measure.

She was too lazy to get out of bed and find real scrap paper, but she figured no one would care.

Much later in the morning, at a reasonable hour, Sally makes a voice recording.]

Right. I've got a question, much as I hate to ask it: since I've been a bit of a dosser when it comes to actually talking to people since I've come here, what with the rampant madness of...everything, and being busy with a few things, I've run short of friends who're willing to do me favors. That being said, I've several articles of heavy furniture that need to be moved up seven flights of stairs.

My usual find-help-moving-house tactic of offering free beer and crisps is moot here, but if there's anyone who can help me out, I'd be happy to negotiate some sort of payment. A favor in return, or something. As I said, I wouldn't ask, but...well. Some of you lot have magic and super strength, and I'm just a regular copper with one very slightly weak ankle. [A self-deprecating laugh that's a little more rueful than she intended. Sally really hates asking for help, but she also really wants her flat not to look like a room in a mental institution, so something had to give.] Thanks, everyone.

[In the afternoon, Sally can be found poking around the item shop, looking for home decorating items and some things she's hoping will show up from her world, and in the evening she'll be at the library doing some cursory research of other worlds and waiting for something interesting to jump out at her.]

I'm not sure; I've never really had one, not since school. I've been doing a lot of reading, though, which is nice, because I didn't have much time for it at home.

Yeah? My mom's family was British.

Does your job keep ya too busy for it?

Really? There, we've got something in common.

Yeah. I'm a detective for London PD, so I put in a lot of hours, and by the time I get home I either have more to do or - if I'm lucky - I get to see my friends now and then.

[He's about to agree with her first statement, but shuts his mouth for a moment to keep from laughing. Their differences as cop and gangster probably more than make up for any similarities.]

You're a detective? Sounds like a crazy job. I guess they don't really mention that in the movies.

[Sally would never guess, as Firo looks about fifteen.]

It's not all that much like in the movies, no. More paperwork. It's exciting now and then, though.

What do you do?

[The same is true of most people.

He hesitates before replying. It's not as if she can arrest him here, but for once in his life, Firo doesn't want to antagonize a cop. She seems nice. After a moment, he decides to just tell the truth. Maybe gambling isn't illegal where she's from.]

Um... I run a casino.

[As a matter of fact, it is not illegal!]

You run a casino? Pardon me for saying so, but you look a bit...young.

[He holds back a sigh; at least she was polite about it.]

I'm not that young. I'm 21.

Oh. [He really doesn't look it, but Sally's trying to be polite, so.] Still, that's young to have your own business. I'm impressed.

Thanks. It's not exactly my own business, though. I just manage it, my Family started it.

Still, not bad. Does it do pretty good business?

Yeah, I'd say so, considerin' there's a lotta other joints around.

Are you just curious, or is this some sorta detective stuff?

Just making conversation. Don't worry, I'm sure you're not running drugs out of the casino or anything. And even if you were, it's not as though I have any authority here.

[He chuckles.]

Sorry, just makin' sure. And there's definitely no drugs involved, we don't even go near that stuff.

Well, I'm glad to hear that. Anyway, I didn't mean to make you nervous; I know some coppers like to make a big deal about casinos, throw their weight around and try to pin something on the owners because they're bored, or they have some kind of moral problem with gambling. I prefer to stick to actual crimes.

Believe me, I know the type...

So what would you call "actual crimes"?

Well, my division is homicide, but I've also dealt in kidnappings, hostage situations...time-sensitive situations that require a lot of backup, mostly.

That stuff sounds pretty exciting! Where's all the paperwork come in?

Someone has to document everything to make sure each case was completed according to exacting procedure, which requires about seventeen different forms to be filled out in triplicate.

Other than that, it can be rather exciting, when it isn't disgusting or depressing.

...Seventeen? And wait, you need three of each one?

It's not literally seventeen. Most of the time. And yes, because certain forms need to go to more than one person.

That sounds awful. Why'd you pick the job if it was like that?
