[For a moment, nothing happens. The camera is focused on a patch of grass. There are rustling sounds and a woman's voice mutters indistinguishably to herself, and eventually the journal is righted so that the camera focuses on Sally's face. There is a leaf in her hair. She does not look happy.]

Right, I think I've worked out what this thing does, and I just want to say that if this is someone's idea of a joke, I'm not laughing. See this? [She lifts up a police badge containing her ID.] This is a police badge. It's my police badge, yeah? It says I'm Sergeant Sally Donovan of London PD, which means that when I find out who's responsible for this, for...this [She gestures down the length of her body, at the dress that isn't hers] and for this [She turns the journal to take in the unfamiliar surroundings] and I don't even know how to start about this [She jerks her thumb over her shoulder at the pair of dark brown wings that definitely aren't supposed to be there] that person or persons are in a world of trouble.

My advice to you, whoever you are, is to come forward immediately. That's less trouble on my part and a lighter sentence for you, so it's in everyone's best interest. Do not make me find you.

[Sally fumes silently for a moment, and when she decides her point has been made, the recording ends.]

Patrols? Like what?

Its less an Interpol thing, more a Japanese police thing, but I and a couple of others walk around town, taking note of who's here, who's not, who lives where. And looking for New Feathers, like you. Sort of like an official neighborhood watch.

Hmm. At least that's something. Japanese, are you? I knew you couldn't be British, at least; you salute wrong. [Er, rethinking that one.] Not wrong for you, sorry; just different from where I come from.

My...salute gave it away, and not my name? Yea, I'm Japanese. Joined Interpol maybe thirty years back, haven't been home much since though.

And you're British. Whereabouts in the UK are you from ma'am?

Where I come from, we have a lot of immigrants who have names native to the country of their parents or grandparents, so it isn't always easy to tell. I just went with something I recognized.

London - well, born in Leeds, but London's home to me. Have you ever been?

Yea, lotsa times. I even have a small apartment there, not far from the Japanese Embassy. Nice place, business takes me there a lot.

Really? That's good. London's a nice town, or so I hear from people who don't have to clean it up.

Well, its not Tokyo, but for a place in Europe? Yea, its pretty great.

How long you been on the force?

I've never been to Tokyo. Suppose being with Interpol lends itself to a lot more travel.

Yea, thats kinda the nature of the job, particularly given my biggest case.

Ten years y'say? Man, I forget what its like ta be that green. I'm getting a bit long in the tooth if you catch my meaning. Been chasing bad guys for...comin' up on 40 years now.

[He flashes a thumbs up, he's in INCREDIBLE shape for a guy pushing 60]

[Pardon Sally, as she may be slightly stunned.] You? Forty years? ...I can tell you I never would have guessed.

I've been tracking my world's greatest thief for something like twenty years now. He's...a real slippery guy, to his credit. Really is just the most resourceful thief I've ever come across. Something of a life's mission, if you know what I mean.

And yea, just shy of forty. I've been working with the Japanese police and Interpol since I was right outta high school. Its the family business.

You've been chasing the same thief for twenty years? [It's gonna take her a second to find a way to put this tactfully; bear with her.] ...Erm, and they've kept you on the case the whole time? What sort of team have you got?

I hope I'm doing as well when I've gotten as far in my career.

Gahahaha, yea. You see...there's a bit of a dilemma on the part of the higher ups. No other officer can even come close to catching this guy. Just me. No other criminal has ever really been a challenge. They can't really take me off the case, I don't really ask for much in the way of resources. Usually I don't even have a team. Not that I don't do other jobs. Lupin's just my pet case. Usually, I get saddled with lots of other stuff too.

[She may think he's bragging, but he's not. The way he states this is just like its a fact of life. Its not in the nature of a conservative Japanese male to really boast like that]

Oh, and...just so you know. That thief? He's here. Be on the lookout for a guy in a red jacket, Arsene Lupin III. He won't hide from you. He's not a violent person, or really even...ehhh....he's not really a threat to anyone here.

[He doesn't particularly look like he's bragging, and he doesn't seem the type, so Sally's inclined to believe him.]

Arsene Lupin from the-- [No, probably not from the books. This world is so weird.] ...He must be a pretty formidable thief; you're sure he doesn't go around robbing people here?

Yea, he's pretty clever, always trying to one-up his granddad. But here, whats there to steal? Everything's free. He doesn't usually take things from people who have nothing anyway, only from the guys that have too much.

[He'll leave out the sleep-thieving, that was Malnosso induced...]

...Fair point. Still. I'll keep an eye on him.

Anyone else I should know about?

Ehh, Monkey. D. Luffy and some of the pirates sometimes get up to no good.

How about you, Sergeant? What sort of cases have stood out for you?

[Monkey D. Luffy? There's a name for you.] There are pirates, now? Blimey, we haven't had those where I come from in centuries - well, there are still some around the coasts of Somalia and the Philippines, but as far as I know, they don't...swashbuckle.

Well, nothing glamorous like chasing uncatchable thieves around the world, but... God, most of the standouts are just gruesome. ...I think the highlight of my career so far was when some complete and utter bastard was kidnapping girls off the streets and locking them in his basement - no demands for ransom or anything, of course, at least six families completely hysterical - and we managed to track the twat down, get him in custody, and find his sick little fun house before worse came to worse. The poor things were all dehydrated and half-starved, but they were all alive and they all recovered. That...that was a good day.

There are pirates here, in Luceti. My world, at least, seems largely free from pirates except in basically the same places. The ones here aren't really the...swashbuckling types. I don't think the word means quite the same thing there as it does here.

And yea, that...sounds like a pretty horrible case. I've had a few of those, chasing some real sickos over the years, but nothing quite like that. Its good to hear that you saved those girls. What happened to the guy?

...Which, "swashbuckling" or "pirate"?

He died in prison, actually. They said it was suicide, but I don't think it was. All the girls he kidnapped were underage; the youngest was thirteen, and even murderers and rapists seem not to take to a criminal who would hurt children. That, and we could never prove anything, but it came up in his trial that he might be linked to heinous crimes committed against several young women over the years that we weren't able to save. Obviously a hunch isn't enough to convict, but I think everyone who worked on the case really believed he'd done it, those other crimes.

...I don't think it's right, people taking law and punishment into their own hands, even in prison and even against monsters like that; I really don't. But all the same, I can't say I'm particularly sorry.

[Zenigata listens to her story, and just shakes his head. Vigilante justice isn't something he condones, even with a partner as insane as Melon-Kichi. It really sounds like Sally's world is just a lot more fucked up than his. Sure, the mad scientists, and even Cagliostro were pretty bad but he'd never dealt with kid-killers, or even heard about it on the news. He's honestly GLAD for the weirdly whimsical nature of his reality sometimes...]

Yea. Definitely agree with you there. Freaks like that get whats coming to them. One way or another.

Then...what does it mean?

I'm just glad the law gets to them first, and that's all I have to say about it.

Apparently, in that place Pirate just means someone who sails the oceans but isn't affiliated with the Marines or a merchant group. From what Smoker tells me, a lot of the pirates don't go around pillaging or robbing, but seem to just be out seeking adventure or freedom or something. I've talked to one or two of them myself, and they don't really remind me much of Long John Silver, more like something out of a goofy comic book.

I expect you'll run into a few.

Sort of like the romanticised notion of pirates people like to put in films where I come from, then. That's actually rather...cute. Smoker's from the same world as the pirates, then?
