[For a moment, nothing happens. The camera is focused on a patch of grass. There are rustling sounds and a woman's voice mutters indistinguishably to herself, and eventually the journal is righted so that the camera focuses on Sally's face. There is a leaf in her hair. She does not look happy.]

Right, I think I've worked out what this thing does, and I just want to say that if this is someone's idea of a joke, I'm not laughing. See this? [She lifts up a police badge containing her ID.] This is a police badge. It's my police badge, yeah? It says I'm Sergeant Sally Donovan of London PD, which means that when I find out who's responsible for this, for...this [She gestures down the length of her body, at the dress that isn't hers] and for this [She turns the journal to take in the unfamiliar surroundings] and I don't even know how to start about this [She jerks her thumb over her shoulder at the pair of dark brown wings that definitely aren't supposed to be there] that person or persons are in a world of trouble.

My advice to you, whoever you are, is to come forward immediately. That's less trouble on my part and a lighter sentence for you, so it's in everyone's best interest. Do not make me find you.

[Sally fumes silently for a moment, and when she decides her point has been made, the recording ends.]

The Malnosso don't have much regard for rank, unfortunately. Do you need some help?

I'm learning as much. And no thanks, I'm all right now. One thing that can be said for this place is that it's full of friendly people.

What's your name, then?

Nefertari Vivi. You can just call me Vivi. [Her smile grows warmer.]

It's very nice to meet you, Donovan-san. You're an officer of law where you come from?

Vivi; that's a pretty name. You can call me Sally if you like. I'm off the clock.

I'm a police detective, yeah. What about you?

Sally-san, then. Thank you.

Ah. Well, back home, I'm a princess.

A [princess]? Royal family, diamond tiara, next-in-line-for-the-throne sort of princess?

More or less. Please don't feel you have to treat me differently from anyone else, though.

[She's had some problems with that before.]

[She's probably not going to run into that issue with Sally.]

Blimey. Bit of a step down, this?

It's not that bad. Usually, at least.

[And when it is 'that bad' it has more to do with Malnosso meddling than a lack of accustomed luxury.]

Setting a good example, then, your highness. If you can adapt, anyone can.

[Vivi holds back a protest in response to that; Sally obviously means it as a compliment, and it would be ungracious not to accept it.]

Hm. [She thinks for a moment--most of the people the crew had considered dangerous or enemies were no longer in Luceti. She finally raises her hands helplessly.]

I'm afraid I don't know of anyone specific at the moment. Some of the worst ones aren't here anymore, but I wouldn't doubt there are a few with less-than-noble intentions. To be honest, you'd probably have more experience with finding and dealing with those types of people than I have.

That is what they pay me for. [Well...paid.] It's good to know some of the bad news have gone back where they came from, though.

[Vivi nods, smiling softly.] Very. Is there anything else, Sally-san?

Not right now, I don't think. Thanks for your help.
